Linux Foundation releases Windows Secure Boot fix

It took longer than anyone expected but the Linux Foundation fix for Windows 8 PC's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot lockout of other operating systems has finally arrived.

James Bottomley --  Parallels' CTO of server virtualization, well-known Linux kernel maintainer, and the man behind the Linux Foundation's efforts to create an easy way to install and boot Linux on Windows 8 PCs -- announced on February 8 that the Linux Foundation UEFI secure boot system was finally out.

To finish this required security keys from Microsoft so that the Linux Foundation UEFI bootloader would work. These keys have now been included and these universal Linux bootloaders are ready to go. With these files you should be able to boot and install Linux on almost any Windows 8 PC.

I say "should" because this is the first release. As Bottomley himself wrote, "Let me know how this goes because I’m very interested to gather feedback about what works and what doesn’t work.  In particular, there’s a worry that the security protocol override might not work on some platforms, so I particularly want to know if it doesn’t work for you."

You must also be an expert Linux user to even try to get this to work at this point. Today, all Bottomley has provided are the two key bootloading files: PreLoader.efi and HashTool.efi. These EFI files are Extensible Firmware Interface Firmware files. By themselves, they just set up a pre-boot environment that can then be used to boot Linux.

Bottomley has also "put together a mini-USB image that is bootable (just did it on to any USB key; the image is gpt partitioned, so use the whole disk device). It has an EFI shell where the kernel should be and uses gummiboot [a simple UEFI boot manger] to load" a Linux distribution.

If you couldn't follow those instructions, don't even try using this method yet. As Pēteris Krišjānis, an Ubuntu Linux tester, wrote on Bottomley's blog, "These instructions are for advanced users only. Users who want to install Linux distro on UEFI/Secure Boot computer will have to wait for distribution releases in April/May (Fedora/Ubuntu and related distros)." Krišjānis is right. Ordinary users should stay well away from this solution for now. It's really meant more for distribution developers. Their job will be to turn these esoteric instructions into something that requires little more than a user hitting an "OK" button. 

In short, by May, it should be easy to boot and install the most popular Linux distributions on Windows 8 PCs. Today, we're still not there, but the developers now have the tools they need to get us there.

Others object to the Linux Foundation's attempt to work with Microsoft to get around Secure Boot's restrictions. One accused Bottomley of folding "to Microsoft UEFI and microsofts monopolistic decision to have OEMs use UEFI whether a consumer wants this or not under the guise of security when in fact its an effort to maintain control on MS part." Others used far harsher terms.

Unfortunately, these people are ignoring the simple fact that the vast majority of new PCs are being sold with Windows 8. This, in turn, means they're locked into that Windows 8 with UEFI Secure Boot Short of cracking UEFI security, something no one really wants to do in Linux development circles; the only viable choice has been to work within Secure Boot to get Linux to work. It's what Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE, and now the Linux Foundation, has chosen to do.

Is this ideal? No. As far as I'm concerned Secure Boot is far more about locking people into Windows than it is about security. For now though fixes like these are Linux's only viable option

Time for LG to take on Samsung head-on. The LG Optimus Pro was spotted in the wild by our friends over at Phone Arena. Yes, this 5.5-inch badboy is going to be taking on the Galaxy Note in big faced fight to the death. Check out these specs:

Rumor No More: Luxury Phone designer Vertu’s first android devices leak… worth the price tag?

                                                                     Recently we shared rumors of a new high-end luxury phone coming soon… to the tune of $4K. We can put those rumors to rest as an entire line of Vertu Android based devices just leaked out on the web,  and we’ve got a gallery of the whole line up to show you. The entire line-up– called the Constellation Ti– consisting of leather, alligator skin, gold and other precious metals.

In the words of Vertu themselves

“VERTU Ti possesses the classic Vertu design DNA and characteristics – strong, unique & distinctive. The design and craftsmanship positions VERTU Ti alongside other iconic products in the luxury market.”

Overall externally these Ti devices are pretty—dare I say it—sexy? So what about the internals? From a spec perspective, the first Ti device will come with Android 4.0.4 ICS, an 800 x 480 display, a 1.5 ghz dual core Snapdragon MSM8260A SoC, bluetooth 4.0, NFC, powered by a measly 1,250MaH battery.  Not so sexy indeed, while these specs may have been pretty nice, last year, today, they’re basically mid-range at best. This is disappointing considering the price tag, said to be anywhere between $4k and $10K.

Check the gallery bellow, and you can see 4 distinct models: The Constellation Ti: “Titanium Black PVD black leather,” “Titanium Black Alligator,” “Red Gold Mixed Metal” and “Titanium Black Leather.” All of which seem to rock hardware keys for Back, home, and recent apps, with the exception of the Ti – “Red Gold Mixed metal” which has keys for Back home and search. My thought being this will be the 1st device released as the specs I mentioned earlier speak of ICS and those buttons are an ICS configuration. Hopefully the other models will come with Jellybean which would match the current OS’s configuration. Only time will tell. So, who’s ready to plop down a few thousand or more for one of these bad boys?

New Samsung Android Devices to Include: Galaxy S Kit, Galaxy S Mate, Galaxy S Impact and Galaxy S Act

It appears that Samsung has registered a bunch of new product names, but we don’t know if they’ll ever be used. Some of these names include the Galaxy S Kit, Galaxy S Mate, Galaxy S Impact, and Galaxy S Act. These have all been spotted in a Samsung trademark filing in the US. Which means if these devices ever do become a reality, they will be headed to the US eventually.

So far we haven’t seen any leaks or any rumors of these devices, so more than likely they aren’t coming soon, if they come at all. Samsung first half of 2013′s roadmap was even leaked, and showed a ton of devices. But none with these names. So these could be devices coming out in 2014 or later, and chances are a few of them will be scrapped.

Now in addition to all these Galaxy S models, Samsung is also looking to register the ATIV Zexy trademark in Europe. The ATIV name has been used on their Windows Phone 8 devices, so we are almost certain that would be a Windows Phone device coming soon. Again if the device actually ever does become a reality. So we aren’t going to worry about the ATIV Zexy, even though it’s a catchy name. But once we get more information on the Galaxy S devices listed above, we’ll be sure to bring them to you.

Like I said above, I highly doubt we’ll see these devices at Mobile World Congress later this month. But the Galaxy S Mate sounds like one of those massive devices like the Huawei Ascend Mate. So perhaps Samsung is looking to do a 6-inch or bigger device soon? The others, I’m not to sure what they could be based on the name. Although I’d love to say “I have the Galaxy S Impact” when people ask what phone I have. It just sounds cool.

So five new Android devices and a Windows Phone. I wonder which OS is doing better for Samsung?

Android “Thumbtop” Computers Are Coming For $50

No, don’t worry, “thumbtop” isn’t a mistake, the term just hasn’t made it’s way into our vocabulary yet, but that should change soon.

If you’ve been following the recent news concerning Dell, you may have heard that the company is going through what people in the hockey world call a “rebuild”. The company’s success in the consumer realm in recent years has diminished due to the rising popularity of smartphones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, Apple, Acer, and Asus. People aren’t buying laptops the way they used to in the 90s, and Dell simply wasn’t prepared for this change in demand.

                                    
Now that Dell’s gone private with its $24-billion buy-out, you may be wondering how the company is planning to get its devices back into our homes. Well, to put it bluntly, they want to kill the desktop computer.

At CES last month, Dell unveiled a tiny thumbstick computer that left critics impressed. The company’s “Project Ophelia” is promised to arrive this June, runs on Android, connects to monitors or TVs via USB, connects to mice and keyboards through Bluetooth, and get this, is going to be sold for $50.

The device is going to come with next to no storage space, forcing users to save all their files on the cloud. As for those of you wondering how this little puppy is going to be powered, well the device runs on simply one watt and will draw its power from the monitor or TV via USB. For those of you who aren’t impressed by that, to put it in perspective, a normal desktop PC requires 300 watts. Impressed now?

As mentioned above, Project Ophelia is due out in June for $50.
